FALL/WINTER 2021

"Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow."

The concept for Fall/Winter 2021 is a quote from Albert Einstein. When COVID-19 emerged, we had hoped that the situation would soon improve. However, it quickly grew moreserious than we could have imagined and the effects spread further than we thought possible. We are restricted from leaving Japan, or even from leaving Tokyo. KUON took thisopportunity to study the history of how humanity has overcome, survived difficulties and major changes in the past to create our future by honing in three elements.

[Color]

200 years ago, during the Edo-period in Japan, the clothing colors of ordinary citizens were strictly regulated by the government. Men and women were only allowed to wear brown, gray and indigo blue. However, the people, through their ingenuity and creativity, came up with many variations of these colors, inventing more than a hundred new tones of each. We have restricted our color palette to blue, brown and gray inthis collection to express Japanese aesthetic of color and the creativity that comes from oppression by using tonal fabrics with different luster.

[Motion]

In the 1920s, women’s social progress was well underway, and their lifestyles changed. Emphasis shifted from corsets worn under fanciful garments to simple day-wear clothing that allowed for freedom of movement, doing away with excess decoration. As people’s lifestyle changes, clothing changes its role. As people spend more time at home due to the COVID situation, they prefer to wear clothes that are easy to wear. In thiscollection, we emphasized that the clothes should be easy to wear but still look elegant. Our specialty, traditional Japanese technic and relaxed cutting are combined with fabrics that have been considered elegantsuch as satin, grosgrain and velvet.

[Layering]

In Japan, there has long been an emphasis on the combination/layering of fabric, materials and colors. It is based on an aesthetic known as “wabi-sabi”. We drawn inspiration from the emphasis and made hems, cuffs and sleeves look layered on some styles. Each item is complete as a single piece of clothing, but when layered together, they create a new style.
